A Second Chance
This note is inspired by the Day the Earth Stood Still. I liked this movie more for the message it tried to tell more than the acting or movie itself.
The Day the Earth Stood Still is about an alien race that comes to Earth to save the Earth, but destroy mankind. A few people who meet the alien in charge of wiping out the human race have the will to plead with the alien by showing why the human race should be spared.
This reminds me a lot about the message of salvation. The human race in the movie is charged with being a violent and evil race that will destroy the planet, and the alien has every logical reason to destroy the human race from his perspective: it is only one species, one that kills each other and threaten to eliminate all other species on earth. It makes sense to destroy this one species to save all of the other ones. In the movie, the humans, plead and should plead for their survival, judging by their actions up until the alien’s arrival.
According to the bible, those who believe in God and repent are saved. Saved from their own destruction, destruction from others, and the divine: destruction and death from Satan and judgment from God. In the movie, TDTEST, the human race, after almost being annihilated, wished that they could change their ways in the face of annihilation and would have been thankful if they were spared. I think most Christians share the same gratitude that they were saved also from certain death, but Christians do not need to prove their worth life the human race in TDTEST. Christians are saved simply because they want to be saved and change. God does the saving after.
Personally, I share the same relief and desire to live a new and different life because I am saved by God. I may forget and not be thankful all the time, but I this movie reminded me of what I faced before. God’s judgment is real, and we need to think about the possible punishment that we faced before in order to appreciate salvation more.
But God is not all about wrath…
He above all else embodies love, compassion, and glory. The cross is evidence of this.
From Isaiah 1:
18 "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
20 but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. If a giant alien sphere lands in Central Park, I'm heading for the caves.
