So we decided during small group to get a scribe (*cough* Mike-Jake) to take notes during SG. I didn't know they'd be so detailed. Anyhow, for those of you who couldn't make it or don't come out, here's men's small group on Tuesday February 10, 2009:
Side Topics: Seventh Day Adventist
Topic of the night: What is passion?
Galin: I Think passion is anything that you have love for doing. You can have passion for sports… yea… people with passion have an easy time doing something. A passion you want to share it with other people.
Jon L: Passion is an intense feeling or affection for something or someone, some idea, some acts. You can have a passion for… or I should say an intense interest in… god… helping others...
Josh: Passion is anything that you would lose sleep for. Ie. DOTA & WOW.
Michael: I think that my passion is music. Because I talk about it so much, it gets annoying.
Victor: If you have an intense love or desire for something. My passion is WOW. Thank God.
Jaemin: Passion is perhaps the greatest motivator, well it has the potential to be the greatest motivator that we have. And that... passion for something motivates us to do that activity endlessly without losing value. Passion may lead us to worship that object. Passion can make us unconditionally fall in love with that thing. It is like a double edge sword.
David: You can best equate it with fire on the inside.
Peter(Josh speaking for): There is good passion and bad passion. Anything God centered is good, while everything that life is centered around is bad.
Do you have a passion?
Jaemin: According to my definition of passion I wouldn’t consider it, but judging from the things you guys said… I think kendo is one. The other one would be volunteer work.
Galin: I used to be passionate for baseball, because everyday I would look forward to the game that would be playing at night.
Jon L: Passion for swimming, knowing that I was swimming 15 seconds under Michael Phelps was kinda inspiring. Learning about countries… because my major is IR. Wikipedia: I look at other country’s profile.
Josh: I had a passion for basketball in highschool, but it faded. Honestly, in highschool my passion was to be cool.
David: I don’t know if I ever had one. I don’t know if I ever felt like I wanted to lose sleep over something. Technically nowadays… I don’t know if you will call it a passion, but I will not sleep without reading my bible.
Victor: Other than WOW, I would have to say that something else I would stay up all night for is finding a good friend. I have a passion for looking for a good wife. A passion for spiritual gifts.
Michael: I love music. <33 OMG Yo.
What are the dangers of passion?
Jon L: It becomes an idol, as you rely on it as a source of happiness.
Jaemin: Pretty much the reason why I like David’s comparison to fire. Fire can be a blessing and a curse. Something must control that passion, or it will go uncontrolled and burn. In the case of Californian wild fire: A controlled fire can help prevent a wild brush fire from burning down ½ of California.
(we digressed about cults and stuff)
David: “Speechless”
Josh: Passion is like a kite you are flying. But nobody is flying the kite, the kite is flying nowhere. The string is like wisdom and guidance.
Michael: “God gave us music to worship without words”
The slumber of the beast
It has ceased and it exists
Ever slowly it has waken
But time has no mean
Tomorrow, today, tasteless
As the everlasting rain

PS I'm not sure we said everything that Mike-Jake typed. But I think the gist of it is right.

I am sorry that I brought this topic up and cannot make it!
ReplyDeleteHowever I will be praying for tonight’s meeting and MSG as well as ACF.
Basically in a nutshell
I think passion is an amazing gift as well as a dangerous thing. When Christians think of passion, we of course cant help but say Jesus Christ! The love of God and the grace of God is so amazing!
2 Cor. 8:9 …….That is God’s grace that he really gave his life and all that he has not because we deserved it but because of grace! I think that’s passion
At the same time…….Hitler had passion. And with that passion he killed millions and millions of people. His passion was for his own pride and sick twisted dream. I think passion is only good and I say only good if it is Gospel Driven, if it is Christ centered.
Even a innocent passion to pursue a Medical Career can be displeasing to God if we disregard our relationship with the most passionate holy Christ and pursue our own earthly desires!
On top of that…I feel as if ACF even cornerstone (the church I attend) lacks passion in our worship. I don’t think realize the amazing grace and passion Christ poured out for us so in consequence its hard for us to respond naturally. We must pray for that fire at the same time beat our flesh (kill our sinful desire) so that the Holy Spirit could empower us!
John 3:16 we all know it but we don’t live it as if we know it. I just brought this topic up because I felt that passion is necessary…..but we as Christians must recognize that the passion that is tied into the love of Christ is the only passion that will bear fruit!
Love you Josh! I’ll make it up to you. Just let me know what I missed and what u guys have coming up……
