March 8th, 2009 - Sunday
1445 Hours, CST
So, today we went on a tour of the city; not your typical tour that shows off the glamour of the city, but one that was showed the truth I suppose. We drove around the 9th Ward, which is still quite devastated. No obvious signs of a tragedy of incredible proportions, but more subtle signs: graffiti left by search teams, signs left over from 2005, empty neighborhoods, a certain look in people's eyes. We also visited the French quarter, which is main tourist attraction for the city. Amazingly, it looks untouched by the hurricane despite it location right by the river. My guess is that economics played a part in its early restoration as well its higher location and lighter damage. Still, it's quite surreal how thin the lines between prosperity and devastation are, yet still remain so clear.
